Letting the train take the strain!

OK, I suppose many travellers have at some time jumped on a train at the last minute and just caught it and found that at the other end there wasn’t a barrier to pass through and so by chance happened not to pay their fare, but did you know that the consistent fare dodgers actually cost rail companies £270m a year. Stations that lose this much needed revenue due to passengers travelling without a valid ticket have been prompted into action by Lord Adonis. The rail minister has called for cash bids to be made by franchise owners in order that gates are put on stations without barriers so as to deter passengers travelling without a ticket.

A 50% growth in turnover was witnessed at Kings Cross following the introduction of gates at the Thameslink station.
